While its true we are often full of a lot of hot air around here at the flower studio, .... none so much as we were last week, and no, I am not referring to the record breaking hot weather we have been having (though we are on par with Miami, Florida for over a couple of months now, and yes, I've been keeping track.) I'm talking balloons.
Big, giant balloons.

The wedding was at The Columbus Museum of Art (...so beautiful! All that natural sunlight, yet you are still indoors. Its the perfect combination on these sweltering hot summer days.) The bride wanted balloons to form a sort of wall at the back of the aisle. She had a black & white theme (her bouquet was in the previous blog post) so we tied all the balloons with a satin black ribbon. It looked simultaneously playful and elegant. Lucky for us, Kelly's mom, Karen, happens to be a balloon expert (what are the odds of that?) The ones she recommended were over two feet in diameter (see tomorrows post to get an idea of the scale.) They were perfect. Thanks Karen! We couldn't have done it without you

Kelly created the altar arrangements using tall curly willow sticks and a plethora of lush white flowers.

North Bank Pavilion was the setting for Beth and Joe's reception. They decided to do a destination wedding in Mexico, but also wanted to do something for their friends and family in Columbus. (We re-blogged this from Heather's Te Amo Floral Design blog- it is so apt that we had to share.)

One would think, and one would be wrong, that our days are spent discussing flowers and weddings and the like. That would make sense, and we do, of course, discuss these things, but long hours at the studio lend themselves to the discussion of pretty much everything under the sun. for example: the other day Melody and I were talking about what drinks are refreshing.... Mojito's, Mint Juleps, etc. We were wondering what went in them (mint) because just previous to that we were all talking about how, as far as hangovers go, Tequila's the best, though we disagreed on the color of Patron. Kelly insisted it was clear. Melody and I said yellow, and I was sure of it because I had bartended at this lovely restaurant called Morada Bay (miss it, love it, you should go). Morada Bay is a tropical, chic restaurant in Islamorada, which is located in the idyllic Florida Keys (miss it, love it, you should go). I served Patron many times there.... and I was confident, due to my vast amount of experience, that I was correct about its hue. Until Kelly clarified we were debating the shade of Patron Silver. and I have no clue what color that is. (though my guess would be Kelly was right.) So, you see....

..... Be it why cornflower, which is clearly blue and not yellow (see photo above) and doesn't resemble corn in the least, is called cornflower*...... or deeper conversations on what is love really, and, more to the point, can you love another, be it husband, lover, friend, or pet, as unconditionally as you love a child (my answer is yes)... we have spoken of it. and don't even get me started on the longstanding debate I have with Kelly over whether Milan Ohio is pronounced the way we pronounce Milan Italy, or as the locals pronounce it, Mylynn, and whether visitors to Milan, Ohio should be corrected on their pronunciation. Though apparently she's right about that, too. {Though it is rude to correct someone on their pronunciation more than once... just sayin.} .... Hours, people, hours.

*Cornflower is named for its habit of growing wild in grain fields, such as barley, wheat, rye, and oats which are referred to as cornfields in England. Not surprisingly, to myself anyway, its endangered due to excessive use of herbicides on crops.

This bouquet is one of our favorite styles

The Bride and her family did alot on their own....we loved the woodburned birch pots they made to hold our centerpieces. They also had rough wood signs pointing the way from the highway to The Darby House, rustic lanterns on some of the tables, and other items that carried her theme throughout...Darby House also has a great fireplace that I'm sure added that cozy element to a blustery evening.

Congratulations to a wonderful couple - their choices were exquisite. Heather has voted this her favorite bouquet (and she creates some gorgeous ones), gardeny and delicate, it was a perfect accent.

The Bridesmaids carried a similar style with deep red Wanted Garden Roses.

The Altars were large and gardeny.

The Door Wreaths were created with dryable flowers for the family to enjoy throughout the year.

REST & INSPIRATION ~ HOCKING HILLS

We frequently escape to the Hocking Hills for a little R&R......rent a little cabin (hot tub required), and explore some of the many trails. Weekend before last we went to the Rock House(one of the only true caves in the region) and came upon these wonderful colors on the cliffs outside the cave. We don't know if it was some sort of phenomena, or whether its normal for this time of year; whatever, when we saw it we were in awe, and, of course, I thought wedding....

What a great addition to your celebration....here are some of our charming flowergirls from last years weddings.

This is why we advise you to hold onto their flowers until right before the ceremony..

They are all angels until somebody gets too tired or just plain cranky. Check with your venue, many have a quiet room. In some of the churches, this room even has a window to the sanctuary so parents can still view the wedding without disturbing the other guests.
Don't be shy about alerting all those attending with children of this rooms location and its purpose.

With a little preplanning...what a wonderful memory they make.

A Spring afternoon in a natural country setting, a loosely gathered bouquet of garden flowers, and we couldn't resist the shoe bows ...... a touch of whimsy is always good.

If you have never experienced Chihuly glass, you are among the fortunate few that have an abundance at your back door. The Columbus Museum of Art Chihuly Exhibit runs through July 4th; and always on display at Franklin Park Conservatory , and Hawk Gallery.

We were thrilled to be invited to do the flowers for a dinner honoring the artist at Hawk Gallery, and we chose to do a Tuscan style table with lots of crystal and candlelight.........here is the man himself, haloed by his work...

Okay, so about a month between posts, but it is wedding season, so I'll cut myself a break. So far the this season has been amazing. We have also had some exciting opportunities, but we'll get to that a little later. So on tho the events...

This is a sandblasted Manzanita Tree w/ hanging votives and a greens and floral base

These are for an event at the Hawk gallery. If you've never been there I recommend that you go.

This is the altar piece that went with the Manzanita centerpiece above (the purple ball-like flower is an Allium, in case you were wondering, and they are very tall and fun to use)

These are for the OSU Urban Arts Space for the Steuben Glass exibit opening event

Okay, here are a few bridals from this past weekend...

Reds and pinks in garden roses, anenome, peony, tulip, ranunculus, and mini calla lily

(I think that's everything ;)

Garden style in whites and all shades of purple in peony, garden rose, iris, ranunculus, sweet pea, and hyacinth

Very fragrant, textured, and large, all white in gardenia, freesia, peony,

and lily of the valley

... And to model this bouquet is Mel- we wanted to show the size comparison
to give you an idea of what this bouquet looks like when you hold it

She makes a lovely model, don't you think?
